Remote access from Mac to Mac: what to use
| You want | Use |
|---|---|
| One app from the other Mac, beside your own apps | Tele |
| The other Mac's whole desktop, a Mac to Mac remote desktop | Screen Sharing, built into macOS |
| One keyboard and mouse for two Macs in front of you | Universal Control, built into macOS |
| A Mac in another building, over the internet | A remote access tool made for that. Not Tele. |
How it differs from screen sharing
Screen sharing shows the other Mac's screen inside one window. With Tele, each window from the other Mac opens on its own, at its real size. You can move it, resize it, minimise it and reach it with ⌘-Tab. While it's in front, the app's menus are in this Mac's menu bar.
Nothing moves on the other Mac when you click. If someone is using it, they keep their pointer: when they move the mouse, it's theirs again.
What you can do
- Open any window on the other Mac, including hidden and minimised ones and windows in other Spaces.
- Start an app that isn't running. Every installed app is listed under All Apps.
- Type in any language, click, scroll and resize from here.
- Copy and paste both ways: text, links and images up to 20 MB.
- Hear the other Mac's sound here, and use this Mac's microphone in its apps.
- Add an app from the other Mac to this Mac's Dock.
Set it up
- Install Tele on both Macs.
- On the Mac that shares its windows, turn on Share this Mac and give Tele Screen Recording and Accessibility.
- Pair them. Both Macs show the same six-digit code, and you allow it on the sharing Mac.
- On your Mac, open the picker from the menu bar and choose a window.
You need macOS 26 or later on both Macs, and both on the same network. There's no account.
What Tele doesn't do
- Show the other Mac's whole desktop.
- Connect over the internet.
- Transfer files, or move a window from one Mac to the other.
Questions
Does anything go through a cloud?
No. Tele has no accounts, no cloud and no relay server. Everything is encrypted between your Macs.
How fast is it?
With this Mac on Wi-Fi, a frame drawn on the other Mac shows here about 40 ms later, at up to 60 frames a second and Retina sharpness.
What does it cost?
The first 14 days include everything. After that, Tele Free opens one window from another Mac at a time, with no time limit. A licence for more is €5.99 a month, €49 a year or €149 lifetime, and it covers all your Macs.
